L13 - Acute and chronic inflammation of the GIT Flashcards
1
Q
What are the different types of diarrhoea?
A
- Secretory
- Hypermotility
- Defective ion transport
- Osmotic
2
Q
What is the cause of secretory diarrhoea?
A
- Small intestinal secretions overwhelm capacity for colonic reabs
- Toxins result in INC cAMP and thus secretion
- Oral rehydration therapy needed
3
Q
What is the cause of hypermotility diarrhoea?
A
- Inc motility results in inc water and electrolytes delivered to the colon
4
Q
What is the cause of defective ion transport diarrhoea?
A
- Na+ transport non-functional
- Bile acids in colon/ fat malabs
- Chloridorrhoea
5
Q
What is the cause of osmotic diarrhoea?
A
- Hypertonic fluid in intestinal lumen
- Abs disorders can results in osmotic diarrhoea
- Microbial fermentation then worsens
6
Q
What is acute inflammation?
A
Short term process occurring in response to tissue injury, usually appearing within minutes or hours
- Characterised by 5 cardinal signs
7
Q
What are the 5 cardinal signs of acute inflammation?
A
- Redness
- Inc heat
- Tumour (swelling)
- Dolor (pain)
- Loss off function (immobility)
8
Q
What is the most common symptom of acute inflammation?
A
Diarrhoea
9
Q
What therapy could be given to mild traveller’s tummy?
A
- Loperamide/ BSS
2. Azithromycin
10
Q
What therapy could be given to severe traveller’s tummy?
A
- Antibiotics
2. Azithoromycin
