L12 Hearing Impaired Flashcards
Hearing Impairment
an impairment in hearing, whether permanent or fluctuating, that adversely
affects a child’s educational performance but is not included under the definition
of ‘deafness.’
deafness
A hearing loss above 90 decibels
Devices for Hearing Impaired
- Home considerations
- Assistive listening devices: (ALDs); amplify the sounds you want to hear
- Hearing aids: help wearer hear certain sounds better amplify sounds that may be detected by damaged ear
- Cochlear implant: bypass damaged portions of the ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve.
- Translators: human or technology
Hearing Impaired: Home Considerations
- Doorbell, smoke alarms: strobe or vibration system
- Bed shaker, vibrating pillow
- Outdoor motion sensing lights: alert movement
- Personal pagers: used by relatives/friends to get attention of person with hearing impairment
Cochlear Implant
- an external portion that sits behind the ear
- a second portion that is surgically placed under the skin
- does not restore normal hearing
- gives a deaf person a useful representation of sounds in the environment and help him or her to understand speech
An implant has the following parts:
* A microphone, which picks up sound from the environment.
* A speech processor, which selects and arranges sounds picked up by the microphone.
* A transmitter and receiver/stimulator, which receive signals from the speech processor and convert them into electric impulses.
* An electrode array, which is a group of electrodes that collects the impulses from the stimulator and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve.
