It was a proxy war and the first war where soviets and US actually fought.
Why could US intervene in Korea
The UN decided to fight against the Soviets in Korea so we didn’t need a declaration of war. We sent 90% of the half a million troops.

it was 67 billion dollars and 54,000 US lives. It also turned Americans against the war sentiment which continued through Vietnam.
