People feared communism within their communities. They would accuse people of being communist which then they would be tried in court.
House Un-American Activities Committee (1938)
investigated disloyal and rebel activities from citizens employees and organizations that are suspicious, then Tried in Court.

He had scare tactics like saying he had a list of people that are communists.
What is Duck and Cover
Propaganda to tell people what to do in case of a bomb exploding from the Soviets. Duck and Cover when out in public or under strong things.
Fallout shelters
Shelters used to hide from nuclear bomb radiation, filled with rations and water. to protect from any damage.
President Eisenhower’s policy of Massive Retaliation (Mutually assured destruction)
Nuclear warfare was irrational because both countries would be destroyed. Depends on no second strike capability, inability to defend, and protection against and accidental launch.
Space Race
The race into space with US and USSR because they both aimed to have space flight. Soviets release Sputnik I in 1957. US lands on moon 1969. Begs the question if there is an attack from space.
