Knots Flashcards
Tippet to fly knot
8 knots
Clinch,
Improved Clinch knot,
16/20 knot - Small flies
Davy knot - best for 18 and smaller size flies, reduces waste, easy to tie.
George Daniel Knot
No slip loop for dry’s
Orvis
Uni
Tippet to leader knot
Surgeons or Orvis Tippet knot
Leader to fly line knot
Most fly lines have loops and leaders have loops, so use the loop to loop connection, if no loop-to-loop use an Albright (very different size lines), Nail Knot (different size lines) or Blood Knot (similar size lines) but blood not not best choice..
Knot when building leaders
Blood knot or surgeons knot
Backing to flyline knot or flyline to leader knot?
Albright knot, or;
Nail knot - The nail knot is slightly more complicated but can be used for a smoother finish.
Bimini knot
Uni knot
When to use a nail knot
When connecting fly line to leader to get a smooth knot
Knot used to put Dacron backing on reel, and then knot to pass fly line spool thru at end?
Uni-knot or Arbor knot, then finish with doubles surgeons knot
Can also use Bimini knot, especially good for heavier weighted lines
The standard knots for connecting two pieces of monofilament are?
The blood knot and the surgeon’s knot.
The 16/20 knot is also know as the?
Also called the Pitzen knot, the Eugene bend knot, or simply the fisherman’s knot.
Excellent for very small tippet diameters and reduces waste.
When do you use a no-slip loop knot?
When you want fly or streamer to have a lot of action.
When to use a Perfection Loop or Surgeons End Loop?
Tie a loop at the end of a fishing line.
Name useful salt water knots?
Same as standard (Perfection Loop, Surgeons, Clinch etc…), but also:
Bimini Twist - The Bimini is considered to be a 100% knot – providing 100% line strength. It creates a double line with a loop at the end to which a leader can be attached with a loop-to-loop connection.
Non-slip loop knot
Spider Hitch - The Spider Hitch quickly forms a double line. It is not considered to be as durable as a Bimini Hitch but is much faster and easier to tie.
Name the knots from reel to fly?
Backing to reel: Uni, Arbor
Backing to Fly Line: Albright, Nail knot
Fly Line to Leader: Albright, Loop-to-loop, Nail (smooth & compact), Surgeons, Orvis Tippet knot, uni
Leader to Tippet: Orvis tippet knot, surgeons, uni
Tippet to Fly:
16/20 - reduce waste and small tags
Clinch, Improved Clinch
Orvis Tippet
Davy - small diameter tippet
Uni
What is a Blood Knot?
The Blood knot is a simple, easily learned and very effective way of joining two similar sized lines.
Ex. when joining sections of leader or tippet, and is one of the best knots for this purpose.
What is a nail knot?
The Nail Knot is a time tested and popular knot to join fly line to leader.
Good for two different size lines.
It is smooth compact knot that readily passes through the guides
