Knock-down fittings Flashcards
Screws benefits
they can be self-tapping (no need for pilot hole), flat ended (flush finish) and come in a range of different purposes and coating for indoor or outdoor use
Are screws knock-down fittings
no
Different screw heads and what are used
philips (most common) - easiest to use in an electric screwdriver, pozidriv - reduces slippage, t-star (star shape) - can get a tighter grip so can be more secure, straight slot - fine furniture and hinges
Different heads on a screw and what are there differences
countersunk - flush with the surface. Round headed screw - as it is flat on the underneath it won’t go into the wood. Raised - a combination of countersunk and round. Twin fast - more grip. Coach - won’t pull itself into the wood
How can you cover up a screw head and how are they used
screw caps/Snap-On - plastic which matches the colour of the product, protect and hide the appearance of the screw. Dome caps - metal but stick out and screw in the middle of the special screw, semi-permanent as can be hard to remove. Screw cups - usually brass/silver and are a ring around the screw which provide a clean look
What are ways to securely joint two pieces of wood together without glue
corrugated fastener, dovetail joining (placing 2 nails pointing away from each other to provide more mechanical stength
What are the different types of nuts
wing nut (2 wings either side make it easier to turn with hands = adjustable), hexagonal nut, square nut, locking nut (2 locking nuts used to create more friction), nylon nut (a small piece of nylon of the inside of the nut and the collar deforms and allows it to compress and be locked in), castle nut and split pin (pin used to fasten nut in place and stop loosening under vibration)
Different types of washers
plain washer, lock washer (open at one end so prevents bolt from rotating), grover spring washer (the gap of the part diverges in the opposite direction from the direction of rotation of the nut, which prevents it from spontaneously loosening), spring washer (provide a spring force and absorb shock countering vibrations), tab washer (tabs are bent over the fastener locking it into place), serrated washer (gripping into a surface with their teeth
