Q
What does the menisci look like and how is it joined to the joint capsule?
A
- Wedge shaped: thicker at edges
- Attached to intercondylar areas
- Attached to joint capsule via coronary ligaments
- Anteriorly attached by transverse ligament of knee
1
Q
What is the role of the menisci in the knee?
A
- Deepens surface of articulation
- Crescentric plates of fibrocartilage
- Acts as shock absorber
2
Q
If a ligament in intracapsular what is it likely to be?
A
- Cruciates
3
Q
If a ligament is extra capsular what is it likely to be?
A
- Collaterals
4
Q
What is the role of the ACL and the PCL?
A
- Anterior prevents femur moving backwards on tibia and hyperextension
- Posterior prevent femur moving anteriorly on tibia and hyper flexion
5
Q
What does PAMs APpLes mean?
A
- Posterior passes Anteriorly and attaches Medially
- Anterior passes Posteriorly and attaches Laterally
6
Q
Which of the two cruciates is the stronger?
A
- Posterior
- Main stabiliser on a weight bearing flexed knee
7
Q
What are the most common bursitis in the knee joint?
A
- Supra-patella
- Pre-patella (housemaids knee)
- Superficial infra-patella (clergymans knee)
8
Q
What is a popliteal cyst?
A
- Abnormal fluid filled sacs of synovial membrane in popliteal fossa
- Signs of chronic knee effusion
9
Q
What investigations of the knee can’t be carried out?
A
- Imaging e.g MRI
- Arthroscopy
- Aspiration
- Clinical examination
