what is a psychological response?
psychological responses can be divided into three categories
- behavioural changes
- emotional changes
- cognitive changes
what are behavioural changes?
behavioural changes refer to how a person looks, talks and acts. for example
-strained facial expression
and a shaky voice and hand tremors
what are emotional changes?
emotional changes influence the way a person feels
for example
- feeling anxious
- tense
- depressed
- angry
- irritable
- short tempted
- hopeless or helpless
what are cognitive changes?
cognitive changes influence a person’s mental abilities
for example :
- maintaining focus
- making decisions
- problem solving
- remembering and thinking clearly

Folkman’s transactional model of stress and coping
proposes that stress involves an encounter between an
individual and their environment and that a stress
the response depends upon both the appraisal of the
stressor and the ability to cope with it
what does the Folkman model suggest?
Folkman’s model suggests that when responding to stress we initially engage in a primary appraisal in which we decide the situation is threatening or positive or relevant or irrelevant to our situation this than leads to secondary appraisal in which we assess what resources are available to us in terms of coping with the situation
