kk1 the roles of different divisions of the nervous systems Flashcards
what is is the central nervous system?
the central nervous system is also known as CNS.
compromises the brain and spinal cord.
it allows the brain to communicate with the rest of the body by conveying messages from the brain to the peripheral nervous system and from the peripheral nervous system to the brain
what is the peripheral nervous system?
the peripheral nervous system is also known as the PNS. it includes all parts of the nervous system that lie outside the brain and spinal cord.
it has two main functions
→to communicate information from the CNS to the body muscles, organs and glands by motor neurons
→and also to communicate information from the body muscles from the inside and outside.
what are the two subdivisions of the peripheral nervous system?
somatic nervous system and the automatic nervous system
what is the somatic nervous system?
the somatic nervous system controls muscles attached to
bones that produce observable body movement
the muscle expand or contract in response to messages
being sent from the CNS
what is the automatic nervous system?
the automatic nervous system is Responsible for
communicating information between the CNS and the
body non-skeletal organs and glands
which carry out the
basic body function necessary for survival.
what are efferent nerves?
efferent nerves transport motor messages out of the CNS to the skeletal muscles
what are afferent nerves?
an afferent nerve transmits sensory messages to the CNS
what is the parasympathetic nervous system?
the parasympathetic system serves two main functions
- it calms the body to a calm state by reversing changes of direction of the messages being sent
- minimises energy use and keeps internal systems body constantly regulated
name the brains 4 lobes
frontal
parietal
occipital
temporal
what is the sympathetic nervous system
the sympathetic nervous system is a branch of ANS
it prepares the body for emergencies.
it is an emergency system that prepares the body for flight or fight response
