kk7 models of stress Flashcards
what is the general adaptation syndrome?
the general adaptation syndrome also known as GAS was developed by selye it is a three-stage physiological stress response that occurs regardless of the stressor that is encountered. when dealing with stress the body always goes through three different stages of stress which include
- alarm reaction resulting in countershock
- resistance
- exhaustion
what happens in the first stage of GAS ?
during the first stage of GAS the body starts in the alarm
reaction where our bodies temporary goes into shock and
our resistance to stress drop below normal levels.
what happens in the second stage of GAS?
during the seocond stage of GAS resistance is activated
meaning the body adjusts to the stress and the normal level of resistance rises.
what happens in the third stage of GAS ?
the third stag eof GAS is called exhaustion this is when the body depletes and the and resistance has dropped dramatically below normal levels
what are the strength of GAS ?
It gives you more energy and improves your concentration so you can focus and tackle the situation.
When stress is short-term or short-lived, the alarm stage isn’t harmful.
what are the limitations of GAS?
the limitations of GAS is that it doesn’t really explain individual differences this is because when testing was done it was done on animals
what is the HPA axis?
hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system
is a chain of reactions in the physiological response to stress
