kk3 the role of the neuron Flashcards
what function does a neuron do?
a neuron specialises in carrying and processing information
and relaying messages between the CNS and PNS,
as well as activating glands and muscles
can neurons function on their own?
neurons can not fucntion on their own, but when neurons
form and link they form nervous systems that regulate,
coordinates and control major functions of the body
what is a dendrite?
a dendrite is a thin structure that arises from the cell body,
it extends for hundreds of micrometres and branching
multiple times
what is an axon?
an axon also called a nerve fibre is a special cellular
extension process that arises from the cell body
most neurons receive signals from dendrites and send out
signals down the axon
what is myelin?
the electrical activity within the axon is covered by a fatty layer known as the myelin sheath
in my words:
fatty layer that covers the axon
what is axon terminals?
Axon terminals also called synaptic boutons, terminal boutons, or end-feet are distal terminations of the telodendria (branches) of an axon
