Kingdom of Life Flashcards
5 kingdoms of life
animals, plant, fungi, protoctists, bacteria
are viruses living organisms?
no, therefore they are not in the kingdoms of life
name the 4 eukaryotes
animals, plants, fungi, protoctists
eukaryotes
made of eukaryotic cells, their DNA is in the form of chromosomes and found in a nucleus
prokaryotes
prokaryotic organisms don’t have a nucleus their DNA is loose in the cell. they are between 10-100 times smaller than eukaryotes
animals (4)
- there are somewhere between 5-10 million species
- multicellular
- heterotrophs
- reproduce sexually
heterotrophs
when animals get their energy from other organisms ege. eating plants and animals
multicellular
made of loads of cells
plants
around 300 000 species
multicellular
autotrophs
autotrophs
organisms that get their energy from the sun
features of fungi
- some are multicellular and some are unicellular
- can’t photosynthesize
- saprotrophs
- some multicellular fungi have a body called a mycelium
- some can be considered pathogens
saprotrophs
organisms do digestion outside of their body by secreting digestive fluids to break down the food then absorbing the nutrients
mycelium
made up of loads of little thread-like structures called hyphre
protoctists
- most are unicellular
- some have chloroplasts, allowing them to photosynthesise (chlorella, euglena)
- some species are heterotrophs (amoeba)
- a few count as pathogens (plasmodium causes malaria)
bacteria (5)
- single celled organisms
- some species can photosynthesise
- none have chloroplasts
- most are heterotrophs
- few can cause disease (salmonella - food poisoning)
