Diffusion Flashcards
diffusion
Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
net movement
the movement of all of the particles considered together as a group
partially permeable
only some molecules are able to pass through them
examples of smaller molecules
water, glucose, amino acids
examples of larger molecules
proteins, starch
passive
doesn’t require any energy from the cell
concentration gradient and diffusion
the larger the concentration gradient between two places, the higher the rate of diffusion will be
temperature and diffusion
a higher temperature means a higher rate of diffusion because higher temperatures give the particles more energy
surface area and diffusion
the higher the surface area the higher the rate of diffusion because a lot more particles can fit on its surface at a time
