Kinetics Flashcards
What is activation energy?
The minimum amount of kinetic energy particles need to react
On a Maxwell Boltzmann curve, why does it start at the point (0,0)?
No molecules have zero energy
What three things indicate the rate of the reaction?
-Time taken for a precipitate to form
-Change in mass
-Gas volume
How do you calculate reaction rates?
Amount of reactant used or product formed/time
How do catalysts increase reaction rates?
They decrease the activation energy
Where is the mean energy of a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution curve?
To the right of the curve
What does the peak of the curve mean on a Maxwell-Boltzmann curve?
The most likely energy of any single molecule
What is the collision theory?
A reaction won’t take place between two particles unless they collide in the right direction and they collide with at least a certain minimum amount of kinetic energy
