Equilibria and Redox Reactions Flashcards
What is dynamic equilibrium?
-The forward reaction is the same rate as the backwards reaction
-Concentration of reactants and products doesn’t change
What are the conditions required for dynamic equilibrium?
-Closed system
-Constant temperature
What is Le Chatelier’s principle?
If a reaction at equilibrium is subjected to a change in concentration, pressure or temperature, the position of equilibrium will move to counteract the change
What happens when the equilibrium shifts right?
-faster forwards reaction
-more products
What happens when you increase the concentration of reactants?
-equilibrium shifts right
-more product
What happens when you increase pressure of products?
equilibrium shifts left
What happens to equilibrium when temperature is raised?
shifts in the endothermic direction
What is an oxidising agent?
accepts electrons and is reduced
What is a reducing agent?
donates electrons and is oxidising
What is an oxidation state?
the total number of electrons that have been donated or accepted
What is a redox reaction?
oxidation and reduction happen simultaneously
What is the half equation for the oxidation of Fe?
Fe –> Fe3+ + 3e-
What is the half equation for the reduction of Cl2?
Cl2 + 2e- –> 2Cl-
