Kinetic and Potential Energy Flashcards
What is Kinetic Energy
The energy associated with moving objects going S PE E D S
What determines Kinetic Energy
Mass and S P E E D S
What is mass
How many atoms can be shoved into a given substance, and unlike weight, mass is always constant unless something is acted upon it that would make it loose mass
What is weight
Weight is caused by gravity, and the weight of an object is dependant on where it is at the time
What is one of the newest energy sources?
wind energy
What is potential energy?
Energy that is stored somehow and can be release and put to use
What are the two types of potential energy
Chemical and gravitational
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy from the gravitational attraction between 2 objects
What is Hydroelectric power
A new cleaner source of energy using potential energy of water retained in a dam or water tower
What is chemical potential energy
The energy of the chemical bonds between atoms which can be released during a chemical reaction
What are the three fossil fuels
Coal, Petroleum, and natural gas
What are the benefits of fossil fuels
1) . They are abundant and inexpensive
2) . They are the number one energy source in the world today
3) . Our technology is built to be fueled with fossil fuels
4) . We have clean water, advanced medical care, and comfy homes because of them
What are the drawbacks of fossil fuels
1) . The use of fossil fuels creates extra Co2
2) . We are mostly reliant on other countries for our supply of fossil fuels
3) . Fossil fuels are not renewable
What is the main risk of oil
It could leak into the ocean and cause massive oil spills
What is a famous oil spill
Deepwater horizon
What is Thermal energy?
Energy in a substance that gives it its temperature
What causes heat
The movement of atoms in the substance
I Thermal energy a natural energy source
yep
Where does most thermal energy come from?
The earth’s core
How does the earth’s core get so hot
THrough the nuclear decay of atoms
What is the energy gained from the earth’s thermal energy called
Geothermic energy
How is fusion different from fission
Fusion is the fusing of atoms while fission is the splitting of atoms
How does fission work?
Via the shooting of a rogue neutron at an atom’s nucleus and playing the most dangerous game of bowling ever where the nucleus is torn apart releasing energy and sending “fission fragments” everywhere which creates a chain reaction between the other bazzilion atoms which do the exact same thing. B O O M Y
What is a major drawback of nuclear power
THe waste is highly toxic and there is a small chance of an accident that could effect the whole dang world
