- heavily influenced by chinese clothing
- Kimono became stylized as Japanese garmet (Heian Period)
- All japanese people wore kimonos (before Meiji period)
- sleeves becan to grow in length (edo period)
When Japanese people wear kimono nowadays
worn by people who like the kimono primarily on formal, ceremonial, and social occasions
Differences between Yukata & Kimono
Yukata:
- only casual
- cotton
- only summer time
- geta with bare feet
Kimono:
- casual to formal
- made from silk, cotton and wool
- all year
- zori with tabi socks
What is Obi
Obi is a sash, a traditional belt.
- 3-4 m long
- wrwapped around waist
- make a shape on the back
- square shape is for married and single wwomen
- fancy shapes (ribbons or flowers) ONLY for single women
What is Zori and Geta
Zori is for kimonos
Geta is for Yukata
in the U.S, flip flops has been popularized from japaneses zori
after world war 2, soldiers brought them back from japan
became prominent unisex summer footwear in 1960s
