kidney disorder Flashcards
functional unit of the kidney; structure that actually
produces urine in the process of removing waste and excess
substances from the blood.
Nephrons
wastes produced from nitrogen; ie. ammonia,
urea, uric acid, and creatinine.
Nitrogenous Wastes
an enzyme secreted by the kidneys that activates the
precursor of angiotensin, a hormone involved in blood pressure
regulation.
Renin
hormone secreted by the kidneys that stimulates
the bone marrow to pro- duce red blood cells.
Erythropoietin
a collection of symptoms that occurs when increased capillary permeability in the glomeruli allows serum proteins to leak into the urine.
a generic term that refers to a kidney
disorder characterized by urinary protein
losses greater than 3.5 g/day. Proteinuria,
hypoalbuminemia, hyperlipidemia, and edema are major symptoms.
NEPHROTIC
SYNDROME
refers to protein sources
that contain allthe essential amino acids in relatively
the same proportions as needed by humans to support
growth and health. They also contain nonessential
amino acids.
High Biologic Value (HBV) -
defined as progressive loss of renal function caused by permanent nephron damage.
Chronic Kidney
Disease
is a blood test that measures how well your kidneys are working. Glomeruli are small filters found in your kidneys.
Glomerular
Filtration Rate
(GFR)
measurement of how well your kidneys function.
Estimated Glomerular Rate
eGFR
shows whether you have
albumin in your urine. Albumin is a
type of protein that’s normally found
in the blood.
