What did Khrushchev do after Stalin’s death in 1953?

A

After Stalin’s death, Khrushchev began appointing his own supporters to important posts and built himself a strong support network in the party’s administration.

When Beria began gaining popularity for releasing prisoners, Khrushchev and other Presidium members conspired against him leading to his arrest in June 1953.

What scheme did Khrushchev launch that led to his support?

A

When leadership was divided on Economic and foreign policy, Khrushchev focused on agriculture and launched his Virgin land scheme in 1954.
His early success helped rally the party behind him.

Why wasn’t the Presidium able to dismiss Khrushchev?

A

When the majority of the Presidium voted for the dismissal of Khrushchev, they were unable to get rid of him as he had the support of Zhukov who was the Minister of Defence → support of the army

When both Zhukov + Bulganin were accused of anti-party activity + dismissed
Khrushchev took their titles which combined the 2 top jobs in the party and government together once again.
