Children with language delay:
Are performing below their expected age and below their peers.
This does not mean they will not catch up. It may mean they required support in meeting targets for their age. And will catch up to peers their age.
THEY FOLLOW THE TYPICAL COURSE OF DEVELOPMENT
Their profile is matched with children who are younger but typically developing
Ok what
Is the difference between late takers
And late bloomers
Late talkers - child says their first words late and may occur when developing language and can persist after the age of 4
Late bloomers? - this is where the child is delayed at around 12-24 months and up to 4 years but by achieve 4 have made significant improvements and no longer considered delayed!
What will you see in DLD
DLD is a language disorder so children typically have difficulty with their language AND SHOW PERSISTENCE!! And persisting language processing difficulties into school age years!
What IS DLD associated with?
- ok DLD
IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY
NEUROLOGICAL SENSORY ( hearing and vision) PHYSICAL DISORDERS COGNITIVE DISORDERS EMOTIONAL DISORDERS!
- hence the case study in the red book by Louise Cummings wherein child presents with hypotonia and cleft lip and palate - she said this is not DLD but rather difficulties associated to their condition! Hypotonia = neurological!!!
