Defendant (D)
The person being accused of doing something wrong
Verdict
The actual decision of a case eg. Guilty, not guilty
Burden of proof
The person who has the job of proving the case
Standard of proof
How much proof needs to be provided to win the case eg. Beyond reasonable doubt
Offence
Another word for crime
Charge
This is when the police accuse someone of committing a crime
Crown Prosecution service (CPS)
The group who decide if a charge should be brought (tell police to bring charges)
Bail
Being given freedom between the time you are charged and the trial
Remand (in custody)
Staying in custody between the time you are charged and the trial
Convicted/ conviction
The verdict when D is found guilty
Acquitted/ acquittal
The verdict when D is found not guilty
Sentence
Punishment given to D after conviction
Magistrates
The 3 people who decide the verdict and sentence in the magistrates court (level of crime- less serious)
Jury
12 people who decide the verdict in the crown court
Judge
The person who advises the jury and decides a sentence in the crown court
