What is the definition of birth rate?
The number of live births per 1,000 people per year.
A measure of an area’s fertility.
What is the definition of death rate?
The number of deaths per 1,000 people per year.
What is the definition of life expectancy?
The average number of years from birth that a person can expect to live.
What is the definition of longevity?
The increase in life expectancy over a period of time.
Direct result of improved medical provision and increased economic development.
People therefore live longer - creates an older population.
What is the definition of natural change?
The change in the size of a population caused by the interrelationship between the BR and DR.
If the BR exceeds the DR, a population will increase.
If the DR exceeds the BR, a population will decrease.
What is the definition of fertility?
The number of live births per 1,000 women aged 15-49 in 1 year.
If the number is 2.1+, the population will replace itself.
What is the definition of infant mortality rates?
The number of deaths of children under the age of 1 year expressed per 1,000 live births per year.
What is the definition of forced migration?
The migrant has to migrate because of circumstances.
What is the definition of international migration?
UN definition - the movement of people across national frontiers, for a minimum of 1 year.
What is the definition of migration?
A permanent of semi-permanent change of residence of an individual or group of people.
What is the definition of net migration?
The difference between the numbers of in-migrants and out-migrations in an area.
In-migrants succeed the out-migrations - net migrational gain.
What is the definition of rural-urban and urban-rural migration?
LEDCs - the net migrational gain of urban areas results in urbanisation.
MEDCs - the net migrational gain of rural areas results in counter-urbanisation.
What is the definition of voluntary migration?
The migrant chooses to migrate.
What is the definition of population structure?
The proportion of males and females in an area, usually in the form of age distribution.
What is the definition of population density?
A measure of the number of people living within a square kilometre.
