Define anatomical position
Body is erect and facing forward, arms at the side and palms forward
Define sagittal (medial) plane
Comes down vertically to divide the body into left and right parts
Define parasagittal plane
Parallel to the sagittal plane
Define coronal (frontal) plane
Comes down vertically to divide the body into front and back parts
Define transverse (horizontal) plane
Comes down horizontally to divide the body into top and bottom parts
Define the axial parts
Aligned with the centre, including the head, neck, and body
Define the appendicular parts
Appendages that attach to the body’s axis, including arms and legs
Define the anterior (ventral) parts
The front of the body, e.g. the eyes
Define the posterior (dorsal) parts
The back of the body, e.g. the butt
Define the superior (cranial) parts
The top of the body, e.g. the head
Define the inferior (caudal) parts
The bottom of the body, e.g. the pelvis
Define medial
Structures toward the midline
Define lateral
Structures further away from the midline
Define proximal
Closer to the trunk
Define distal
Further away from the trunk
