Theistic Evolution
The belief that life evolved on earth according Neo-Darwinian theory, but that such evolution was guided by God.
Theodicy
the discussion or philosophical debate over how God is a just God in a world where injustice flourishes.
Theophany
An appearance of God to humans. Christian theology has often understood most Old Testament theophanies to be appearances of the pre-incarnate Christ.
Third Isaiah
supposed anonymous source of Isaiah 55-66 according to some critical scholars. Third Isaiah is supposed to have lived and written after the Babylonian captivity.
Third Use of the Law
function of the Law in which a Christian uses God’s Law as a guide for life and practice. The third use of the Law is always a response to the Gospel, but it continues to function as the Law, and so often transforms into the second use (the mirror). This use is also known as the “rule.”
Torah
Hebrew for “Law” or “Instruction.” It is also used in a narrow sense to denoted the five books of Moses (Genesis-Deuteronomy), also called the Pentateuch.
Type
persons, events, and institutions in the Old Testament that point forward to a greater fulfillment in Christ.
Unconditional Promise
A promise that the giver will fulfill under all circumstances. It places no requirements on the one receiving the promise. Many of God’s promises to Israel were unconditional promises. (See Conditional Promise.)
Vassal
person under the protection of a suzerain to whom he has vowed homage, loyalty and submission.
Verbal Inspiration
indicates that in the doctrine of inspiration, the actual words themselves are inspired and not simply the ideas of the text.
Yahweh
the personal name of God in the Old Testament.
Zealots
Palestinian Jews who sought through violence to resist the forces of Hellenism and foreign domination.
