Aaronic Benediction
the blessing given to the priests by Moses to be used when placing God’s blessing upon the people (Num 6:22-27).
Acrostic
in ancient Hebrew poetry, an alphabetic poem in which the first line. or group of lines begins with the first letter of the alphabet and subsequent lines begin with the following letter.
Actual Sin
acts committed against God’s Law. These acts flow from the sinful corruption of human nature after the Fall (see Original Sin).
Allegory
a non-literal, highly symbolic reinterpretation of a text.
Ammon
an ancient people descended from Abraham’s nephew Lot. They inhabited the Transjordan Plateau northeast of the Dead Sea. Also the region inhabited by these people.
Antithetical Parallelism
parallelism in Hebrew poetry marked by emphasis on contrasting concepts.
Apocrypha
books often grouped with the canonical books of the Bible by Protestants but not considered part of Scripture. These books, written in the intertestamental period, are accepted as part of the canon by Roman Catholics and some Eastern Orthodox Christians.
Arabah
the area south of the Dead Sea extending southward to the Gulf of Aqabah.
Baal
the Canaanite storm god. During most of the Old Testament period he was considered the head god of the Canaanite pantheon.
Bashan
region east and northeast of the Sea of Galilee.
Bronze Age
period of time in the ancient Near East when bronze was the metal of choice for making most tools. It was followed by the Iron Age.
Canaan
Son of Ham and grandson of Noah; also another name for Palestine, the region consisting in recent times by Israel and the western part of Jordan.
Canon
when applied to the Bible, the collection or list of books that are considered Scripture.
Catechesis
teaching the Christian faith.
Causative Authority
the ability of the Scripture to testify to its own truthfulness as God’s word independent of human authorities.
