Key Question Flashcards
Key question
What are the implications for society if addiction is treated with drug therapy?
À01 drugs
If Drug addiction is partially a bio cause (eg. Heroin changes rp functioning in brain)= tackled with bio treatment drug like Methadone.
Heroin
Agonist so binds to opioid receptors= trick the brain> releasing endorphins=relieves pain/reduces stress
dopamine= improves mood>Euphoria.
Heroin side effects
downregulate fewer active receptors= decrease dopamine & endorphins ltm as body responds excess amount
withdrawl symptoms= dysphoria, headaches if they don’t take drug lower than usual levels of dopamine/endorphins
Greater each time to feel high due to Inc tolerance> addiction or overdose
Methadone
Acts as replacement to Heroin= activates same receptors rp.
slower than heroin> heroin user not enough to prod euphoria.
It reduces the withdrawal symptoms as binding to the receptors still occurs
Ao1 analysis
Cost of abuse crimes = whist on drugs> obtain drugs
Heroin = highly addictive expensive > users are reliant on criminal activity eg theft to obtain money for drugs.
>violent acts>society more dangerous
£13.9 b annually and 148m to enforce law on drug-related crime= imp we treat addiction in society.
