to stop atrocities from occurring again
we need to understand if ordinary people can commit genocide (e.g. Eichmann who was executed for his part in the Holocaust, was deemed sane and had an ‘ordinary life’ and claimed he just followed orders)

genocide appears to be a regular and widespread event in the history of civilisation, the phrase ‘never again’ is often used in relation to genocide which has been contradicted up to present day
