culture
a way of life for a group of people. built from a shared set of norms & values. e.g. popular culture, high culture
norms
unwritten rules which guide our behaviour in society. they are socially constructed and based on values. can change over time. e.g. waiting in line, saying thank you
values
the beliefs, ethics and moral views deeply held by most ppl in society. taught through agents of socialisation and differ in different societies e.g. you should be polite, you should wait your turn
roles
a part you play in society which has a set of norms or patterns attached e.g. mother, manager
status
refers to someone’s position in society, can be ascribed or achieved
cultural diversity
a variety of cultural & ethnic groups within a society e.g. chinatown, Soho
multiculturalism
cultures mixing and matching with eachother e.g. world food aisles in shops, hybrid identities (Back)
social construction
ideas and culture socially constructed by poeple to create social solidarity. e.g. gender, virginity
subculture
a smaller group within a larger group that has its own values which are different to the wider group. e.g. Goths, Mods and Rockers
high culture
the kinds of culture enjoyed by those with a higher status in society. e.g. Polo, Opera
popular culture
a simple/ less sophisticated version of culture. e.g. Reality Tv, football
global culture
collection of norms and values which cross national boundaries. many can communicate and travel more due to globalisation. e.g. mcDonalds, Coca cola
consumer culture
a set of ideas that encourage people to buy a range of never-ending products. e.g. designer brands Gucci, Prada
cultural hybridity
a new form of culture created from combining 2+ forms of culture. e.g. Blasian and Brasian
socialisation
the process by which we learns norms, values, and behaviour appropriate to our society. can be learnt in trough primary and secondary agents.
