was used to get to either side of Vietnam
USA needed to capitalise
sent USA advisors to help the Laotian leader
61-62 neutralised Laos
Bay of Pigs
April 1961- 1600 guerrillas
Cuban exiles and the news warned Castro so he was prepared
Landed too far from the flee spot
Castro was very popular in the area and JFK wanted to use minimal aid
JFK suffered worldwide humiliation
Castro moved to Soviets for protection and announced communism
Berlin Wall crisis
after Vienna summit June 1961 tensions had risen
August 13th fences went up and 4 days later a wall
JFK speech- 10th June
but acted in no way, Khrushchev now sees Kennedy as weak
Vietnam
JFK wanted to help Vietnam because- useful coastline, democracy could work, would loose face and divide the public
sent in advisors and by JFK’s death there were 17,000
Battle of Ap Bac= failure ARVN didn't want to fight Diem- couldn't win a war, US people began to dislike USA suggested reforms and diem refused eg- Hamlet Program
November 63- Diem assasination
Cuban Missile crisis
14th October 1962 missile sites photographed by U2 plane
16th October JFK decides on a naval blockade of Cuba
he called this quarantine
B52 Bombers were on alert and 156 ICM’s
24th October- 2 ships and a submarine got close to the 500m line but Khrushchev halted the ships
27th October- Soviets removed ships and USA removed atomic bombs from turkey
Peace Corps
1961 young volunteers who teach and give tech aid to under developed countries training programme 61-63 went to 44 countries 71% of Americans approved financed for 50 years
