Kaylin States of Matter Flashcards
What is a liquid?
A substance where it’s particles are close but still move a little bit.
What is a solid?
An object that it’s particles are very close together
What is a gas?
When it’s particles are all spread out and have a lot of KE
What is plasma?
When something starts as a gas but becomes ionized
What is energy?
The ability to do work
What is thermal energy?
The KE in a substance
What is evaporation?
When a substance changes from a liquid to a gas
What is sublimation?
Solids changing straight to a gas
What is condensation?
The process that gas changes into a liquid
What is crystalline solid?
When particles in an object have a certain arrangement of particles
What is amorphous solid?
Objects that have no certain order for their molecules
What is surface tension?
The force that is acting on the particles at the surface causing the liquid
What is kinetic energy?
Energy that moves or is in motion
What is heat?
The change of an objects temperature
What is endothermic changes?
Changes that require energy in order to happen
What is exothermic changes?
When energy is released as the substance is changing
What is a fluid?
A gas or a liquid- a nonsolid that has atoms and molecules that move freely past each other.
What is a buoyant force?
Upward force on an object that causes it to float on liquid.
What is pressure?
The amount of force applied on an object
What is Boyle’s Law?
The volume of an object depends on its pressure
What is Charles’s Law?
Volume of a gas increases as temperatures increase.
What is Gay/Lussac’s Law?
Pressure of the gas increases as temperature increases.
