Kaylin Chapter 5- The Stucture of Matter Flashcards
What is chemical structure?
How atoms are placed in a substance
What is a chemical bond?
The force that holds atoms and ions together by attracting
What is bond length?
Length between the nuclei and 2 bonded atoms
What is bond angle?
The angle that is made when two bounds form on the same atom
What is an ionic bond?
The attraction of ions with different charges that create a bond
What is a metallic bond?
Attraction between positive charged ions and the electrons surrounding them, forming a bond
What is a covalent bond?
The bond formed due to atoms sharing 1+ sets of electrons
What is a polyatomic ion?
An ion created by 2+ atoms
What is empirical formula?
A compound in relative numbers and kinds of atoms in simplest ratio.
What is molecular formula?
A chemical formula showing the kind and amount of atoms, but not their arrangements
What is organic compound?
Covalently bounded carbon contains compound, that doesn’t have carbonates and oxides
What is polymer?
Molecules made by 5+ monomers
What is a carbohydrate?
Organic compound consisting of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen that helps provide nutrients to cells in all living things
What is protein?
Organic compound made up of 1+ amino acid chains that are the main component of cels
What is amino acid?
One of 20 organic molecules that contain carboxyl and amino group that together form proteins
What is a hydrogen bond?
The attraction of an oxygen atoms of a water molecule and a hydrogen atom of another close water molecules
What is formula unit?
The element plus it’s charge that makes up a compound
What is a nonpolar covalent bond?
When electrons are shared equally between a positively charged nucleus
What are polar covalent bonds?
When the electrons aren’t equally shared between the nucleus
What is a hydrocarbon?
Atoms made only of carbon and hydrogen atoms
What is an alkane?
Carbs that have only a single covalent bond
What is an alkene?
Carbs that have at least one double covalent bond in between its carbon atoms
What is DNA?
Organic molecules that form your genetic makeup
