Chapter 7- Solutions Flashcards
What is a colloid
Mixture of tiny particles mixed in sizes between solutions and suspensions that are suspended in a solid, liquid or gas.
What is emulsion,
Mixture of 2+Immiscible liquids where one is in the other.
What is a solution?
Homogeneous mixture of 2+ substances uniformly mixed together.
What is a solute?
Substance that dissolves in a solvent
What is a solvent?
Substance that solute dissolves in
What is an alloy?
Solid or liquid mistress of 2+ metals
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
A mixture without a fixed composition and can still be separated.
What is decanting?
Pouring a lighter liquid off of a heavier liquid
What is Immiscible?
Do not mix
What is the Tyndall effect?
The scattering of light
What is a polar compound?
Molecule with unevenly distributed electrons
What is hydrogen bonding?
When a hydrogen atom is bonded with a highly electronegative atom of one molecule is attached to 2 unshared electrons of another molecule.
What is nonpolar bonding?
Compound where it’s electrons are evenly distributed to its atoms.
What is solubility?
Max of a solute that will dissolve in a solvent at a given quantity, temperatures and pressure
What is concentration?
Amount of particles in a substance in a given quantity of a mixture, solution or ore
What is an unsaturated solution?
Solution containing less solute than a saturated solution does and that is able to dissolve in additional solute.
What is a saturated solution?
Solution that can’t dissolve any more solute under the given conditions
What is a supersaturated solution?
Solution holding more dissolved solute than required to reach equilibrium at a given temp.
What is molarity?
Concentration of a solution in moles dissolved solute per liter of a solution.
What is an insoluble?
Don’t dissolve
What is soluble?
Dissolves easily
What is dilute?
Solution containing a small amount of solute.
What is suspension?
Mixture where particles in a material are evenly distributed throughout the liquid or gas
