kaylin Matter Flashcards
What is matter?
Any object that takes up space and has a mass
What is chemistry?
The study of composition, structure, and properties and changes that matter goes through.
What is an element?
A substance that can’t be simplified by chemical means
What is an atom?
The smallest unit of an element
What is a compound?
Substance made of two or more different elements
What is a molecule?
Smallest unit of a substance that keeps all physical and chemical properties of the substance.
What is a chemical formula?
The recipe for a substance made of chemical symbols and numbers.
What is a pure substance?
Either single or a single compound element that has chemical and physical properties
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances combined but aren’t chemically combined.
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
When two substances mix together but don’t mix uniformly
What is a homogeneous mixture?
An evenly distributed mixture that can’t be separated
What is a miscible?
A homogeneous mixture of atleast 100 liquids.
What is an Immiscible?
A mixture that separates into layers (oil and water)
What is a melting point?
When solids become a liquid after it reaches a certain temperature and pressure.
What is a boiling point?
When liquid becomes a gas when it reaches a certain temperature
What is density?
The mass of an object compared to the objects volume
What is reactivity?
When substances are allowed to chemically combine with one another.
What is flammability?
When substances react to oxygen and catch fire when they are exposed to flames
What are physical properties?
The observation of an object without changing the identity of the substance.
What are chemical properties?
The observation of an object only when you change the identity of the object
What is a physical change?
When the substance or material is changed but is still the original material.
What is a chemical change?
Changing a material or substance to create a new substance
