Kaylin. Sound and Light Flashcards
What is pitch?
How high or low a sound is perceived
What is a sound wave?
A wave caused by vibrations and travels through a medium.
What is infrasound?
Slow vibrations with frequencies less than 20 Hz.
What is ultrasound?
Sound wave with a frequency higher than 20 000 Hz.
What is resonance?
Occurs when 2 objects naturally vibrate with the same frequency.
What is intensity?
The rate that energy flows through space
What is a decibel?
Unit used to measure the loudness.
What is fundamental frequency?
The frequency of a standing wave.
What is harmonics?
Fundamental frequency and at a certain whole number multiplies of that frequency.
What is sonar?
A system that uses signals and echoes to see the location of something or communication.
What is the basilar membrane?
A flexible membrane in the cochlea that vibrates at different natural frequencies.
What is a photon?
The unit or quantum of light
What is intensity?
The rate energy flows through an object
What is radar?
A system that determines velocity and location of objects by using reflective radio waves.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
A spectrum that has light of all possible energies, frequencies and wavelengths.
What is a light Ray?
A line that goes the same direction of the radiant energy in space
What is a virtual image?
Image that forms at the location from light rays that appear to be there but aren’t actually there.
What is a real image?
An image that forms when light rays actually form at a specific location.
What is diffuse reflection?
The reflection of light in random directions
What is geometrical optics?
The study of light when it acts as a ray
What is angle of reflection?
The angle that light rays reflect off the surface.
What is angle of incidence?
The angle light rays strike the surface.
What is law of reflection?
When the angle of reflection and angle of incidence are the same.
What is the normal?
The point where light hits the surface.
What is a convex mirror?
A mirror that curves inward
What is a concave mirror?
A mirror that curves outward.
What is Total Internal Reflection?
Total reflection when the angle of incidence of light hit a boundary less than a critical angle.
What is a lens?
A transparent object that refracts light to form an object
What is magnification?
Changing the size of an object.
What is a prism?
2 or more transparent planes that are at an angle.
What is dispersion?
The separation of different frequencies in a wave that makes individual component waves
What is a mirage?
When light refracts in the atmosphere making a virtual image.
What is a converging lens?
Lens that bends light in.
What is a focal point?
The main focus when light rays come together.
