Q
A
42
Q
A

Having been led to the Chamber, the initiate is instructed to sit at a dimly-lit desk on which there is a human skull, a loaded revolver and a machete. There is also a pen, some ink and the questions,
pared down to only three:

➢The next step in the initiation ceremony was the lecture given by the “terrible brother” (master of ceremonies) who informed the neophyte to withdraw if lacked courage since he would be out of place in the patriotic society.

➢If the neophyte persisted, he was presented to the assembly of brethren, who subjected him to various ordeals, such as: blind-folding him and making him shoot a supposedly loaded revolver at a person or forcing him to jump at a supposedly hot flame.

➢After the ordeal came the final rite – the pacto de sangre (blood compact).

➢The neophyte signed an oath with blood taken from his arm. He acquired a symbolic name by which he was to be known within the Katipunan circles.

➢Bonifacio’s symbolic name in the Katipunan was Maypagasa, Emilio Jacinto’s, Pingkian; Emilio Aguinaldo’s, Magdalo; and Artemio Ricarte’s, Vibora.

Q

ANG NINGNING AT ANG LIWANAG (MULA SA LIWANAG AT DILIM NI EMILIO JACINTO.)

A

Tayo’y
napapangiti, at isasaloob.

Saan kaya ninakaw?

loob, walang magpapaningning pagka’t di natin pahahalagahan.

kaapihan?

45
Q

KATIPUNAN PRESS AND NEWSPAPER

A
46
Q

The official newspaper of the Katipunan was? founded and edited by? printed by?

A

The official newspaper of the Katipunan was
the Kalayaan, founded and edited by Jacinto. It was
printed by the two patriotic printers named Fastino
Duque and Ulpiano Fernandez.

47
Q

To deceive the Spanish authorities, the
Kalayaan carried a false masthead stating that it was
being printed in Yokohama with Marcelo H. del Pilar
as editor.

A
48
Q

THE KATIPUNAN AND JAPAN

A

At the time, Japanese would also helped them fight off Spanish. In fact, the Katipunan’ Big Three along with Daniel Tirona and Interpreter Tagawa “Jose” Moritaro secretly met with the captain of a Japanese Warship and the Japanese Consul at a bazaar in Manila on May 1896.
During their meeting, the Katipunan handed to the captain their letter to the Japanese Emperor asking for the Japanese people’s help to liberate the Philippines. Although the end of the meeting saw the Japanese agreeing to sell the Filipinos much-needed arms and ammunition, the deal never transpired due to lack of funds and because the revolution broke out prematurely. Also, Jose Dizon, the man tasked to secure the weapons from Japan, was one of those arrested early on.

49
Q

DR. RIZAL AND THE KATIPUNAN

A
  • On June 15, 1896, Dr. Valenzuela, acting as
Bonifacio’s emissary, sailed for Dapitan to get
Rizal’s support to the coming revolution. But Rizal
did not agree to the plan of the Katipunan to start a
revolution because the people were not ready for it.
  • Rizal wanted more time to prepare the people for
war. He was in favor of a revolution as a last resort.
But before launching it, arms, money, and supplies
must be collected. If the revolution should come, he
recommended Antonio Luna to be the military
    commander.
50
Q

DISCOVERY OF THE KATIPUNAN

A

As the Katipunan were busy plotting an uprising,
Manuel Sityar, the Spanish Lieutenant of the Guardia
Civil, reported the strange activities of certain
Filipinos gathering arms and recruiting men for
unknown reasons.

On August 13, 1896, Father Agustin Hernandez,
an Agustinian curate of San Pedro, Makati, informed
Don Miguel Luengco, the civil governor of Manila,
about a secret gathering in his parish whose members were bringing bolos.

On August 19,1896, the Katipunan was
discovered by the Spanish Authorities. Teodoro Patino,
a Katipunero, confessed to Father Mariano Gil about
the existence of the Katipunan upon the advice of a
nun at Mandaluyong Orphanage where his sister was
working. Teodoro also revealed that the printing
materials of Katipunan can be found at the office of
Diario de Manila. These evidences were presented to
the Spanish Authorities.

XIV. When these rules of conduct shall be known to all, the longed-for sun of Liberty shall rise brilliant over this most unhappy portion of the globe and its rays shall diffuse everlasting joy among the confederated brethren of the same rays, the lives of those who have gone before, the fatigues and the well-paid suffering will remain. If he who desires to enter has informed himself of all this and believes he will be able to perform what will be his duties, he may fill out the application for admission
