Mechanism of Action: Bisphosphonates
A
stabilize hydroxyapatite bone structure–> osteoblasts secrete osteoclast inhibitors–> ↓bone resorption—> progression of OP

A
Paget’s dz, postmenopausal OP, glucocorticoid induced OP

A
End in “-ate” Alendronate, Pamidronate, Etidronate

SE’s of bisphosphonates
A
GI distress (esophageal ulcers), may increase risk of osteosarcoma long term d/t osteoblast stimulation

Mechanism of action: Teriparatide
A
recombinant PTH analog; Give once daily. When given in little bursts daily it does not have same outcome as PTH

SE of Teriparatide
A
Used >2 years–> increased risk of osteosarcoma
