JVD 2019 #2 Diagnosis and Tx of an Odontogenic Epithelial Tumor in a dog with features of Squamous Odontogenic Tumor; Hodesson, Soukup Flashcards
What is the most common odontogenic tumor of epithelial origin in dogs?
CAA
List epithelial odontogenic tumors reported in dogs
CAA; other types of ameloblastomas; amyloid-producing odontogenic tumor, and calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor
Ameloblastomas
Benign, but locally destructive
Odontogenic epithelium with no induction of odontogenic mesenchyme
usually arise centrally within the jaw
distinguished from other epith. odontogenic tumors by having differentiated ameloblasts
palisading basal row of columnar cells with apical nuclei
Squamous odontogenic tumor in humans
Rad= triangular or semicircular radiolucency within the alv bone and adjacent to the lateral root surface; wide base between diverging apices of the affected teeth
Does NOT have ameloblastic features (stellate reticulum, palisading columnar cells w nuclear polarization away from the basement memb)
Where are odontogenic epithelial neoplasms thought to arise from?
Neoplastic transformation of odontogenic epith. such as rests of Serres from dental lamina or rests of Malassez from Hertwig’s root sheath
