Important to not favour any party or have a direct or indirect relationship with any party, no bias and prejudice or apprehended bias. Push all external ideas to the side

Control and supervise the case, make decisions about whether or not the evidence is permitted or excluded
Decide or oversee the outcome of a case
In the magistrates Court, the magistrate will decide on guilt and sentence. In the county and supreme court the jury decide on the guilt and the judge will decide on the sentence

if the accused is found guilty, or the accused pleads guilty
