Jordans Notes 2 Flashcards
What does detergent do in a lysis buffer?
Breaks apart membranes by attaching to lipids
How to calibrate a molecular clock?
Geological events
Fossils
What is a group that includes an ancestor and a descendants?
Monophyletic or Clade
When a species branches into two different species on a phylogenetic tree?
Bifurcation
bifurcating
Two convergent descendants but no common ancestor?
Polyphyletic
What is a homologous trait also called in phylogeny?
Synapomorphies
What are analagous traits formed through convergent evolution called?
Homoplasy
What is a solution?
A liquid mixture where on substance is dissolved in another
What is a solid substance that is not dissolved in a solution?
A precipitate
What does a lysis buffer contain?
- Detergent (binds to lipids, breaking apart cell membranes)
- Proteinase enzymes (denatures nucleases)
- Chaotropic salts (creates a hydrophobic environment and destabilises hydrogen bonds (denaturing proteins))
What causes DNA to bind to silica membrane during DNA extraction?
The hydrophobic environment caused by chaotropic salts
-Forms a salt bridge
