JOINTS: Physiology Flashcards
joint (articulation)
The coming together of two or more bones.
Suture joints
Immovable joints, such as between the skull bones.
Synovial joints
Freely moveable joints. Ball and socket type (hip, shoulder). Hinge type (elbow, knee, ankle)
Joint capsule
This is fibrous tissue surrounding the bones of a synovial joint.
Synovial cavity
The empty space between bones at the joint
Synovial membrane
tissue lining the synovial cavity; produces synovial fluid
Articular cartilage
White, smooth tissue covering the bones at the joint; within the synovial cavity
Synovial fluid
Water and nutrients that lubricate the joint to reduce friction on the articular cartilage
Meniscus
Crescent-shaped. Fibre and cartilage. Partly divides a joint cavity. Acts as a cushion. Present in the knee.
tendon
connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
ligament
tissue connects bone to bone
bursa
Closed sacs of synovial fluid located near but not within a joint.
Commonly found between tendons and bones, between ligaments and bones, and between skin and bones.
olecranon bursa
elbow bursa
prepatellar bursa
knee joint bursa
subacromial bursa
shoulder joint bursa
