Joints in the skeletal system Flashcards
What is the movement range of fibrous joints and give example?
Fibrous joints are fixed and can not be moved for example cranium.
What is the movement range of Cartillaginous joints and give example?
Cartillaginous joints have a slight range of movement for example the vertebrae.
What is the movement range of synovial joints and give example?
Synovial joints are bale to move freely such as the Ankle, knee, hip, elbow, shoulder, neck and wrist.
Give a description of what ligaments is?
Ligaments are made up of tough, white, non-elastic fibrous tissue.
They can withstand a lot of tension but prolonged tension can permanently damage the fibers.
What are the four main functions of ligaments?
1) Attaching and connecting bone to bone
2) Enhancing joint stability
3) Guiding joint motion and alignment
4) Preventing unwanted motion in the joint.
What is the purpose of tendons?
To attach muscles to bone across the joints and transmit the force.
For example the achilles tendon attaches the calf muscle to the heel bone.
