Joints Flashcards
What is a joint? What do they do?
(articulation) the coming together of 2 or more bones,. Only exception is the hyoid bone, which anchors the tongue.
joints hold our bones securely together and make movements possible
What is synarthroses?
non moving joints. Fibrous connective tissues that grow between articulating bones; example: sutures of skull
What is amphiathroses?
Joints that allow for slight movement. Cartilage connects articulating bones; example: pubic symphysis
What is diarthroses?
Free moving, most joints. Synovial joints. Ex. knee
What is a bursa?
A sack of synovial fluid near a joint
What are the 6 types of joints? What are some examples of each type?
- Ball and socket joint: shoulder joint
- Hinge joint: elbow
- Saddle joint: carpometacarpal joint
- Pivot joint: head of radius against ulna
- Condyloid joint: atlantooccipital joint
- Gliding joint: articular processes between vertebrae
What is a ligament?
Connects bone to bone
What is arthritis? What are the 3 types?
- Inflammation of any joint
ex. - gouty arthritis: inflammation due to excessive uric acid in body (pain in foot that migrates to big toe)
- osteoarthritis: degenerative joint disease that causes inflammation of bone and joint. loss of articular cartilage and formation of bone spurs at articular surfaces, can occur in any joint.
- rheumatoid arthritis: autoimmune reaction against joint tissues (synovial membrane). often accompanied by joint deformity
What is carpal tunnel?
Compression of median nerve that passes between transverse ligament and bones and tendons of the wrist
