joints Flashcards
what is a joint?
A joint is the part of the body where two or more bones meet to allow movement.
What are joints also known as?
An articulation
What are the 3 types of joints and their amount of movement?
Fibrous: immovable, Cartilaginous: slightly moveable
Synovial: freely moveable
What are the 6 types of synovial joints?
- Plane joints
- Pivot joints
- Hinge joints
- Ellipsoid joints
- Saddle joints
- Ball and socket joints
What are the 3 types of joints?
Fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial
Provide the movements and examples for a saddle joint.
Movemements possible:
-flexion/extension
-abduction/adduction
-circumduction
Examples:
Sternoclavicular joint (collarbone)
Provide the movements and examples for a plane joint.
Movements possible:
Sliding/gliding movement
No rotation occurs
Example:
Vertabrae
Provide the movements and examples for a pivot joint
Movements possible:
-Allows rotational movement
-Pivoting movement
Examples:
Atlantoaxial joint (top of neck)
Provide the movements and examples for an ellipsoid joint.
Movements possible:
- flexion/extension
- abduction/adduction
-circumduction
Examples:
-Metacarpophalangeal joints of fingers and toes
-Radiocarpal joint of wrist
Provide the movements and examples for a hinge joint.
Movements possible:
Flexion/extension
Example:
-Knee
-Elbow
-Ankle
-Interphalangeal joints of fingers and toes
Provide the movements and examples for a Ball and socket joint.
Movements possible:
- Flexion/extension
- Abduction/adduction
- Circumduction
- Medical/lateral rotation movements
Examples:
Hip and shoulder joints
