Q

What are short bones?

A

Short bones are roughly cube shaped, and have only a thin layer of compact bone surrounding a spongy interior. They are approximately as wide as they are long.

Function:
Facilitate stability and support.
Example: Metacarpals

Q

What are long bones?

A

Long bones are longer than they are wide, compromised of mostly compact bone but thick enough to contain considerable spongy bone and marrow in the hollow centre.

Function:
Acts as a rod for muscle attatchmentand allow movement
Example: Femur

Q

What are Sesamoid bones?

A

Sesamoid bones are mostly small and irregular shaped embedded in tendons.

Function:
Supports tendons
Example:
Patella- located within the quadricep tendon

Q

What is an irregular bone?

A

Irregular bones consist of thin layers of compact bone surrounding a spongy interior. The shape is complicated and irregular.

Function:
String minerals and interacting with muscles and tendons.
Example:
Sacrum

Q

What is a flat bone?

A

Flat bones are strong, flat bones that enable muscular attatchment and protection of vital organs.

Function:
Protects Organs and acts as attatchment
Example:
Sternum
