Joints Flashcards
Name and describe types of joints
Synovial- bones separated by a cavity
Solid- bones held by connective tissue (no cavity)
Functions of joints
Synovial- movement
Solid- stability and union
Types of synovial joints
1.Plane - sliding, eg. acromioclavicular
2.Hinge- flexion and extension, eg. elbow, humero-ulna
3.Pivot- movement around one axis, eg. atlanto-axial
4.Condylar- two axes that are at right angles to each other, eg. wrist
5.Bicondylar- knee
6.Saddle- joint of the thumb
7. Ball and socket- hip joint
Solid joints
- Cartilaginous (SS)
- Fibrous (SSG)
Types of synovial joints
BSC EHP Pass
B
Hip and shoulder
S
Metacarpal of the thumb
C
Wrist and knee
H
Elbow, humero- ulnar
Plane
Tarsals and acromioclavicular
Pivot
Atlanto-axial
Bicondylar
Knee
Cartilaginous joints
Synchondroses- e.g grow plate : two ossification centres remain separated by a layer of cartilage
Symphyses- e.g pubic symphysis : two separate bones connected by cartilage
Fibrous joints
Sutures- occur in skull
Gomphosis- between teeth and adjacent bone
Syndesmoses- 2 adjacent bones linked by a ligament e. g ligamentum flavum and interosseous membrane
