“My new power tempted me until I feel into slavery”
The metaphor of slavery reveals how Jekyll is completely imprisoned and powerless. Suggest how Hyde had taken over. “Temptation” links to the devil and in the Story of the Fall and original sin.

“Man is not truly one,but two”
The juxtaposition of “one”
and “two” exposes the duality of man highlighting the clear divide between the good of Jekyll and evil of Hyde. This is because Jekyll recognises that the duality of human nature should be repressed and his actions have ultimately destroyed him.

“To be wicked , tenfold more wicked”
The repetition of ‘wicked’ emphasises how Hydes thoughts and feelings are far more sinful than Jekylls as he has become as slave to his original evil: Hyde.

“My devil had long been caged, he came out roaring”
Devils and animals are clearly distinct from humans so this imagery stress how inhuman and immoral Hyde is. Additionally , these images created acknowledge that the passions Hyde actions on are a natural , lower part of us that we may have concealed or repressed to maintain our reputation much like the behaviour of Victorian gentleman in society. Gentlemen had dual natures where they acted immorally at times but hid this part to their personality because they knew they would be looked down upon if it was discovered.
“AlatctoEH”
“Assume like a thick cloak that of Edward Hyde”
Simile reveals that Jekyll uses Hyde as a ‘cloak’ allowing him to hide and do whatever he pleases. Furthermore , Jekyll has a desire to do something however he will not let himself do it so he gets Hyde to instead. This links to the emerging idea in the Victorian era of humanity is constant conflict as people have alter evil egos which are secret.
