Chapter 8: The last night
“Shtlafos”
“Stood huddled together like a flock of sheep”
The imagery with all the servants huddled around the fire as if for protection helps to create tension and convey their anxiety to the reader. By likening them to a flock of sheep Stevenson suggests their vulnerability and inability to cope with the danger of Hyde.
“Iiattcth”
“It is a thing that cries to heaven”
- Poole describing Hyde to Utterson
The noun “thing” dehumanises Hyde suggesting he is an object or a lesser animal not a human being. The verb phrase “cries to heaven” conveys that Hyde knows that it’s done wrong and is pleading to heaven for forgiveness. Much like how Victorian people would have been at the time as society was highly religious.
“Acapc”
“A crushing anticipation of calamity”
- How Utterson is feeling before they break the door down
Utterson has an ominous fearful sense of the city’s landscape now that Mr Hyde stalks it. He anticipates Hydes “crushing calamity” over the city and its people. This portrays how Utterson has a great sense of responsibility in the novella as the protagonist because if he fails great harm may be caused.
“Hw”
“Hysterical whimpering”
Oxymoron reveals Hydes crazed personality is seen as unnatural in society. This is because the adverb “Hysterical” presents him as happy with an absence of distress. However the verb “whimpering” reveals his pain and suffering with an absence of happiness.
“Wtmtlam…iwdmsli…igymbwiwMH”
“When that masked thing like a monkey…it went down my spine like ice… I give you my bible word it was Mr Hyde”
The word ‘monkey’ relates to Hydes primitive actions revealing his animalistic tendencies. The simile “went down my spine like ice” connotes how scared Poole was when seeing Hyde as he froze. The phrase “bible word” connotes he is telling the truth in his recount as he is swearing on God’s name.
