Q

“Lsdp”

A

“Like some disconsolate prisoner”

This simile not only suggests physical confinement but also highlights Jekylls mental imprisonment-trapped by his dual identity , he must conceal Hydes existence. The reference to being a ‘prisoner’ reveals that there is no escape for Jekyll and that is why he is depressed as he has come to the realisation that he can never return. This foreshadows the future events of the novella.

Q

“Ftvbottgb”

A

“Froze the very blood of the two gentleman below”

The use of symbolism represents the initial warmth of Utterson and Jekylls meeting, only to be destroyed by Hydes presence , freezing them. Furthermore Utterson’s caring nature is shown here as a well respected ‘gentleman’ is revealing his true emotions which heightens the reality of the situation as Victorian gentleman were supposed to be reserved , controlled characters.

“The smile was struck out of his face succeeded by abject terror and despair”

The violent verb “struck” conveys how quick their feelings change after seeing their old friend. The emotions of “abject terror” and “despair” convey the horror and concern Utterson and Enfield have for their old friend.
