DISLOCATED JAW, how would the patient present, how is it caused?
Very painful
Patients unable to close their mouth
Jaw may be twisted to one side
Typically caused by opening the mouth excessively wide
Though contact sports injury is another cause
More likely to occur in patient who have had previous jaw dislocations
Long term TMJ disorders may develop
Considered an urgent dental problem
Appearance of dislocated jaw on x-ray?
The mandibular condyle is away from the articular eminence and the patient will be unable to close their mouth
TMJ fracture, what causes it? overview
Second most common fracture to the jaw
Common causes:
Direct trauma (fall, assault)
RTC
Sports injuries
Muscles may be damaged as well
An open fracture can occur if the tissues within the mouth are torn
TMJ fractures dont occur in isolation, if you spot one, keep searching

Pain
Swelling and bruising
Bleeding
Discomfort
Jaw stiffness
Numbness
Dental related problems
Breathing difficulties
Unable to close mouth
Mandible body fractures causes
Causes of fractures:
Assault: 50%
RTC: 10%
Falls: 15%
Sports injuries: 15%
Other: 10%
Mandible body fractures clinical presentation?
Pain
Swelling and bruising
Chin paraesthesia - numb chin
Malocclusion
Trismus - lockjaw
Dental damage
Laceration of the skin of the EAM
Guardsman fracture, caused by? overview
Parade ground fracture
Caused by fall on to the midpoint of the chin
Common in patients with epilepsy
Also, elderly patients and soldiers who fall forward due to syncope
Fracture through the symphysis with fractures of both condyles
