Jaundice Flashcards

1
Q

Bilirubin Metabolism

A

Heme: broken down to Fe and unconjugated bilirubin (lipid soluble)

Enzyme: UDP glucuronyltransferase adds glucuronic acid (water soluble)

Intestine: GI enzyme removes glucuronic acid to form urobilinogen (10% reuptake via portal vein)

Q

Pathological Jaundice

INCREASED ENTEROHEPATIC CIRCULATION

A

Gilbert’s: mutation in UGT1a1 gene causing decreased activity UDP glucuronyltransferase enzyme

Crigler-Najjar: absence of UDP glucuronyltransferase
